The 32nd President of the United States spoke these remarks before the conservative group Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Washington, D.C. on April 21, 1938, to remind listeners that we are all descendants of “immigrants and revolutionists.”
Washington’s two-term limit became the unwritten rule for all Presidents until 1940. In 1940, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt won a third term. Roosevelt was the first and only President to serve more than two terms.
